Definitions
Here are some definitions of words that will be used often or aren't very known
- Sustainability: Ability to be maintained at a certain level or rate
- GMO's - Genetically Modified Organisms - Genetically modified food
- HFCS - High Fructose Corn Syrup - This is a mix between two sugars, Fructose and Glucose
- WHO - World Health Organization
- CDC - Centers for Disease Control
- Obesity - The state of having too much body fat
- Overweight - Being over the weight that is set for your height and bone structure
- Glycemic Index - Measure how fast and how much food raises your blood glucose levels
- Monoculture - Growing only one kind of crop on a farm
General U.S. Obesity Statistics
- 11.5 million US women (10.2 percent of all women age 20 years and older) are obese
- 12 million US men (11.2 percent of all men age 20 years and older) are obese
- 186,300 people under the age of 20 are obese
- 12.2 million adults over age 60 are obese
- Americans drink more than twice as much soda today than in 1971
- 1/2 US population consumes sugar drinks on a given day
- 70% of boys 2-9 years old drink sweetened drinks every day
- Excess consumption of soft drinks contributes to obesity and type two diabetes
- 1/3 of Americans are obese- More than doubled since 1970
- Among children ages 2-19, about one in six are obese
- If a child has an obese parent they are three times more likely to become obese
